The Coloring Page That Comes Alive: How a Paper Fish Reaches the Screen

From the outside it looks like a magic trick: a child colors a fish on paper, an adult points a phone at it — and the very same fish, scribbles and all, starts swimming in an aquarium on the TV. Magicians never reveal their tricks. This one is too good not to.

Step one: a sheet that can introduce itself

It all starts with a coloring sheet — a plain A4 page with the outline of a fish, a seahorse, a turtle, or a jellyfish. What is unusual about it are the four black squares, one in each corner. Every square is a tiny mosaic of cells, and the mosaic encodes two facts: which creature lives on this sheet, and which corner this is — top left, bottom right, and so on.

Thanks to the markers, the sheet can introduce itself to a camera: I am a seahorse coloring page, and here are my four corners. Which is why there is exactly one rule for the artist — do not color over the markers. The rest of the page is entirely theirs, going outside the lines included. Nothing breaks.

Step two: a phone instead of a scanner

When the drawing is done, an adult opens the capture screen in the aquarium and points the camera at the sheet. From here the phone does a job that used to require a scanner and a lot of patience. It hunts for the four markers in the photo — trying a range of brightness thresholds, so dim evening light or a cafe lamp is not a problem. Then, from the four corners it found, it straightens the perspective: even if you shot at an angle and the sheet looks like a trapezoid in the photo, the math rebuilds it into a clean rectangle.

The code in the markers already told the phone which template this is — and therefore exactly where the creature's outline runs on the page. The drawing is cut out along that outline: margins, tabletop, and the shadow of a coffee cup all stay behind. One subtle detail: the thin printed outline itself gets shaved off the edge, otherwise the fish would wear a dark rim around its body, like a sticker.

Step three: the drawing becomes skin

Now we have a clean drawing of a fish — flat, as paper tends to be. To make it swim, the drawing is stretched over a three-dimensional model as its texture. The model's side profile matches the outline on the sheet, so every marker stroke lands precisely where it belongs: the stripe on the flank, the dot on the fin. The model bends, flicks its tail, banks into a turn — and the drawing moves with it like real skin.

This is also why children's "imperfections" are not a bug but the whole point. Pencil hatching, overlapping marker strokes, a belly left half-uncolored — all of it stays visible on the swimming fish and makes it unmistakable. A child spots their own fish among a dozen strangers in a second.

Step four: an aquarium on any screen

The aquarium itself is a web page. Open it on a TV, a tablet, a laptop, a projector — anything with a browser. The fish swim through the full depth of the scene, you can sprinkle food from a phone, and new residents appear on every open screen at once: colored in the kitchen, spotted by grandma three time zones away.
